An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in positions just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other platform users also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
